My DH lost his phone at a bar over the weekend and since he is only a year into his contract he isn't eligible for a new one without paying an arm and a leg. We are looking for a 4G phone and will pay depending on type of phone condition etc.

@plantains: I don't have anything 4G that we're not currently using, but I've had a lot of luck both buying and selling on craigslist! You just need to meet at a verizon store and they can verify for you that the phone is clean (aka not stolen etc). I just recently sold my mint condition samsung galaxy nexus and bought a used samsung note 2 and both myself and my buyer are very happy

@mrs. wagon: wow, genius, why didn't I think of this??? Thanks so much, I had wanted to try Craigslist but was worried about verification.

@plantains: credit goes to Wagon Sr. ... he is always 'upgrading' our phones without actually buying them new! We are grandfathered in to unlimited data so we will never sign a new contract... so he does this for each of us once or twice a year. I'm always complaining about having to switch phones, but I love every new phone more and more

@mrs. wagon: Thread jack... Buying a new phone will result in a new contract? My iPhone 4 needs to be replaced... I didn't realize Verizon would consider that a new contract though?
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@LindsayInNY: if you want to get promotional pricing or "upgrade" your phone, you need to be eligible (your contract is ending) and at that point you sign a new contract. Not a big deal if your new contract is the same as your old... But we had unlimited data which they got rid of. So if we sign a new contract, we'll lose that.. Which is why we can only purchase phones used or at retail price.

@mrs. wagon: Oh man. I didn't realize that's how it worked... Mom, sister and I all have unlimited data. DH does not. We're all about due for new phones but mine is the only one that isn't working 100% anymore. I also wanted to add an iPad to the plan next year. I'm guessing that would change things too? This is all so complicated! I even looked up iPhones on Craigslist and even 4 and 4S' we're $250+! Insane!

@LindsayInNY: eee yeah, you might want to consider getting a used or retail price phone if you use a lot of data.. If not, you might even save by getting a new contract. Or if your DH is happy with his phone you could hijack his upgrade.. Have him get the phone you want, then switch. I have no idea about the iPad... Assuming it's sort of like adding a line to your plan, but for data.

@mrs. wagon: DH is on our family plan. So if he gets a new phone, wouldn't that be renewal of the contract for all of us? I don't even know if the unlimited data is that beneficial to us. But I would hate to be without it! Now that I think of it, I don't think the iPad would be a huge issue... DH was added to the family plan after the removed the unlimited option and the 3 of us weren't affected. Could they have made this any more complicated?!

@LindsayInNY: Lol! Yeah, the separate lines of a family plan are all separate contracts, so no problems there. I hate dealing with this stuff but I only know so much about it because of Wagon Sr.! Also, when I was pumping 4x a day I used 20GB a month of data. Streaming Netflix. So yeah, we needed to keep it.. Haha.

@mrs. wagon: Ahh, I didn't know that! The data might be helpful once there's a LO... But good to know that my mom upgrading wouldn't affect my data. And, truthfully, she doesn't even use enough to warrant having unlimited. So many SHE gets a new phone, loses the unlimited data and gives me her current one! *Off to convince mom...*

@LindsayInNY: there you go, problem solved
This is the most epic thread jack ever.. Hope @plantains doesn't mind!!

@mrs. wagon: is that only with Verizon?I'm with AT&T and that's not not true. I upgrade my phone every 2 years and have kept my unlimited data.

@locavore_mama: yep, I only know about Verizon, and know a bunch of people who got off Verizon to get an unlimited plan again. I think Verizon has a new unlimited plan and its really expensive.
Gonna start a new thread on the boards about this!

Verizon is doing a promotional thing now where you can get 6 gigs of data for the same as what I paid for my old unlimited plan. They checked my usage, and I rarely went beyond 2 gigs, and I am on my phone constantly and rarely use wifi for my phone.

This is the best threadjack ever as I am considering switching fom T Mobile to Verizon to be on a family plan with DH so it is good to know the ins and outs of how it works.

@Mrs. Confetti: Ooh, that's good to know. I don't know if we really *need* unlimited data. My sister might and at times DH and I come "close" but that's it. I have no clue what current plans are even available!
Sorry @plantains:!!

@mrs. wagon: You are brilliant! I'm so looking into this so maybe we can finally upgrade. I really want to keep our unlimited data. I think since I've been with them for about 13 years so they should let me keep it because of my loyalty lol.
